National Needlework Archive

The Old Chapel Textile Centre in Newbury, home of the National Needlework Archive, offer courses, workshops and exhibitions in sewing, haberdashery,  needlecraft, textiles, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting and textile art. Our shop carries an extensive range of all needlework and sewing products including fabric, threads, wool, zips and patterns. We have an archive of historic textiles and patterns and are home to The Country Wife mural.

All Workshops require pre-booking. Payment can be made at the Centre by cheque (made payable to The National Needlework Archive); online by Eventbrite (please note there is an extra charge for this), or by credit card at the Centre (after 2nd February 2019). Workshops are for adults unless stated otherwise. (See also ‘Activity Saturday’ pages for activities that children can join in)

Have all the WW1 centenary events made you think you would like to make something in memory of a member of your family, or of something similar. Inspired by your memorabilia, and guided by your tutor, make a small commemorative wall picture.

MAKING CONNECTIONS Session 1
As part of our exciting new workshop programme for 2019  we will be running a series of four week sewing and embroidery courses. Learn new skills or build on existing knowledge while making lovely decorative items to enjoy for yourself or to give as gifts.  You can build your own reference files from worksheets given throughout the course and enjoy creative and productive mornings with friends.

MAKING A BANNER

Taking your own design ideas the tutor will take you through the whole process of designing and making a modern banner which will be a long-lasting treasure for your group or church.  Two group members may attend to work on the banner.

SANDIE LUSH. HAND QUILTING FOR ALL

Designed primarily with beginners in mind, this class covers the basics of hand quilting whilst making an elegant cushion. Choice of threads and wadding will be covered during this class as well as the basics of quilting design. The class will help more experienced quilters improve their stitching technique, but they can also choose to do some designing whilst the beginners sew.

‘SHOW AND TELL’ SESSION’

To complement the Berkshire Federation of WI’s exhibition Linda Connell, Director of the NNA, will host a ‘show and tell’ session featuring some usually unseen items from the NNA’s WI collection. This session will put the items shown in the context of both the WI and the social environment of their time and discuss the construction techniques and conservation issues of each piece. Cost £4.00 each. Booking necessary for this event.
