The Old Chapel Textile Centre in Newbury, home of the National Needlework Archive, offer courses, workshops and exhibitions in sewing, haberdashery,  needlecraft, textiles, embroidery, cross stitch, quilting and textile art. Our shop carries an extensive range of all needlework and sewing products including fabric, threads, wool, zips and patterns. We have an archive of historic textiles and patterns and are home to The Country Wife mural.

Zippy Zappy Pouches with Jill Brennan


Learn to make a quick, lined and zippered pouch - with a fun appliqué picture on the side.

These can be made in all shapes and sizes - with a waterproof lining - or a simple cotton one.

They make great presents and have zillions of uses for young and old.

Jill will bring patterns for free-motion appliqué designs or you can use your own!

A fun day and a project that will be useful for years to come.

An Introduction to Machine Embroidery with Anne Griffiths


Learn the basics of free machine embroidery, how to use the decorative patterns that are on your machine in a creative way or simply look at the range of needles that are available to give an extra dimension to your stitching. Suitable for complete beginners or those who have some knowledge, you will create a set of small samples which could be used in patchwork or appliqué projects or simply as a stitched sampler.

You will need to bring your own machine and be able to lower, or cover, the feed dog and a darning foot.

Learn how to twiddle the knobs with confidence!

Whether you have just bought an overlocker or had one for years but never got to grips with it these 2 sessions are for you.  Bring your overlocker along to The Old Chapel and Anne will help you find out how it works, what it will do, and how to get the most out of it.

Session 1 includes: Rethread the easy way, Balanced stitches, Neaten raw edges
Session 2 includes: Rolled hems, Gathering fabric

Embroidery surgery with Anne Griffiths


Do you have an ongoing project or want to start something new but don't know quite where to start?


Bring your project and ideas along to this workshop and Anne will advise and give suggestions on where to start or how to progress, using either hand or machine embroidery techniques. You will also be able to swap ideas, tips and creative knowledge with other students. As a starting point, we will look at how transfer paints can be used to create a unique background fabric which could be further developed during the day.


You will need to bring a machine to this class if you want to develop free machine embroidery skills. There will be a small charge for transfer paints.

Needle Felted Wall Hanging with Sue Howell

Following the success of last year's workshop, students will have the opportunity to make a needle felted wall hanging.  This will combine a needle felted design with a variety of embellishments such as tassels, bows, ribbons, buttons, sequins and Dorset buttons.  You are only limited by your imagination!

Advanced Goldwork Sampling with Jen Goodwin

A day of sampling different advanced goldwork techniques, these samples can then be bound together to form a unique little samples book.

Skill level required: Advanced goldwork
Student equipment/materials list: Materials packs can be made, these will be £20 per student and need to be ordered in advance. Alternatively students are advised to bring along their own materials for a day of experimentation.
Kit includes: Backing fabrics, an assortment of different goldwork metals and padding options.

An introduction to English smocking on pleats for the novice. Learn how to prepare the fabric and some basic stitches to get you started.

Folk Tales with Anne Kelly


Using a variety of found shapes and paper cuts, we will produce a series of folk influenced printed fabrics.  These will then be overlayed and added to with lace, ribbon and stitch.  They can be converted into greetings cards, or incorporated into a larger piece of work.
