National Needlework Archive

The National Record of Millennium Needlework

Bradford on AvonThe National Needlework Archive was funded by the Millennium Commission to make a record of all community textile pieces made to celebrate the Millennium. These pieces of textile art, some small, some very large, are generally housed in public buildings of some description. They are beautiful and important ‘documents’ of history and social comment. Nearly a thousand works have been recorded and the NNA is still recording pieces not yet included. If you know of a textile project, made to celebrate the Millennium, do contact the NNA.

The associated Stitch 2000 research project is following some of the Millennium textiles through their life, monitoring their condition and social context. The groups which made them were asked to provide detailed information about the pieces when they were made and this information will be used as a future basis for research or possible conservation work.
